Concealed Utility Access System
Project type
Architectural product integration
Concept
A custom designed frame and cover system created to visually integrate a low voltage utility hub into a finished interior surface while maintaining full accessibility for cable management.
Design Challenge
The utility box functions as a centralized exit point for wiring routed through wall conduit, requiring frequent access without exposing cables or hardware. The frame needed to align precisely with existing screw locations and wall clearances. Printer size limitations also required the frame to be segmented without creating visible seams.
Technical Execution
The frame was modeled in CAD to match exact mounting hole placement and surrounding dimensions. Due to print bed constraints, the structure was divided into modular sections and reassembled using concealed joints integrated into a repeated floral motif that masks seam lines while providing structural connection. The top element was engineered as a friction guided sliding component. The removable insert doubles as an internal alignment stop, ensuring consistent positioning and clean reassembly after access. Tolerances were refined to allow smooth operation while maintaining secure fit.
Outcome
The completed system transforms exposed infrastructure into an integrated architectural feature while preserving functional access. The project demonstrates precision measurement, modular assembly strategy, concealed joint design, and user centered mechanical planning.
